How to source electronic components and parts: authorized vs independent distributors, supplier comparison, component verification and obsolete / EOL parts.
The Basics
Electronic component sourcing is the work of finding, qualifying and buying the electronic parts a product needs — at the right price, in the right quantity and on time. Buyers choose between the original manufacturer, authorized distributors, independent distributors, brokers and excess inventory. Each channel trades off availability, price and authenticity risk, so the best electronic components supplier for a part in normal supply is often not the best one during a shortage or after a part goes end-of-life.
This guide compares the sourcing channels, lists well-known electronic components suppliers, explains how component verification works and what to do with obsolete parts. It is written by Baiyan Technology, an electronic components company in Taiwan with nearly 30 years of experience in IC sourcing, trading and verification.
Channels Compared
There are five main channels for buying electronic components. Authorized distributors and the original manufacturer carry the lowest authenticity risk but can run out during allocation. Independent distributors, brokers and excess inventory can fill those gaps — including semiconductor sourcing for parts on long lead times — as long as every lot goes through component verification.
| Channel | What it is | Availability | Price level | Authenticity risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original manufacturer | Buying direct from the chipmaker under a supply agreement. | Factory lead time; high minimum order quantity | Contract price | Lowest | High-volume production with a stable forecast |
| Authorized distributor | A distributor franchised by the manufacturer to resell its electronic parts. | Stock plus factory orders for active parts | List price or quoted volume price | Very low — full traceability | Active parts in normal supply |
| Independent distributor | A supplier that sources market stock worldwide, outside the franchise chain. | Can locate parts the authorized channel has run out of | Market price; can exceed list during shortages | Medium — needs component verification | Shortages, urgent needs and EOL components |
| Broker / trading house | An intermediary matching buyers with sellers, often without holding stock. | Varies by request | Varies | Higher — depends on supplier vetting | One-off hard-to-find parts |
| Excess / surplus | Leftover inventory released by OEMs and contract manufacturers. | Limited quantities and specific date codes | Often below list | Medium — check storage and date code | Cost-down and legacy builds |
Suppliers at a Glance
Large catalog distributors such as Digi-Key and Mouser suit prototypes and active parts; global and Asia-Pacific authorized distributors such as Arrow, WPG Holdings and WT Microelectronics serve production volume on franchised lines. An independent electronic components supplier in Taiwan such as Baiyan Technology focuses on parts those channels cannot deliver in time, and verifies them before quoting.
| Supplier | Based in | Type | Main focus | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baiyan Technology 百驗科技 | Taoyuan, Taiwan | Independent sourcing & verification | Multi-channel sourcing, authenticity check and quality inspection, EOL / legacy parts, ODM/OEM support | Shortage and obsolete parts bought by RFQ, verified before quoting |
| Digi-Key Electronics | United States | Authorized catalog distributor | Broad online catalog, small quantities, fast shipping | Prototypes and small batches of active parts |
| Mouser Electronics | United States | Authorized catalog distributor | New product introductions and online catalog | Engineers ordering new and active parts |
| Arrow Electronics | United States | Global authorized distributor | Volume supply and supply chain services | Production volume on franchised lines |
| WPG Holdings 大聯大 | Taiwan | Authorized distributor (Asia-Pacific) | Semiconductor distribution across Asia-Pacific | Asia-based manufacturers buying franchised semiconductors |
| WT Microelectronics 文曄科技 | Taiwan | Authorized distributor (Asia-Pacific) | Semiconductor distribution with design-in support | Asia-based manufacturers on franchised lines |

Component Verification
Component verification confirms that electronic parts are genuine, correctly marked and in good condition before they are used. It matters most for parts bought outside the authorized channel. A typical inspection flow moves from paperwork to the package, then inside the package and finally to an electrical test. Baiyan Technology puts verification before quoting — Verify comes before Quote in our process.
Certificate of conformance, packing list and original reel labels are checked against the order and the manufacturer's format.
Markings, leads, packaging, moisture barrier bag and humidity indicator card are inspected under magnification.
Part number, lot and date code are compared for consistency across reels, trays and the manufacturer's marking style.
Die size and bond wires are compared with a known-good sample to catch remarked or empty packages.
The package is opened on a sample to read the die marking and confirm the real manufacturer.
Key parameters are tested so semiconductor parts work as specified before they reach your line.
Obsolete / EOL Parts
EOL components (end-of-life) are parts the manufacturer has stopped making. Once authorized stock is gone, obsolete parts can only be found on the independent market, so a plan is needed before the last reel runs out.

FAQ
Short answers to the questions buyers ask most about electronic parts, suppliers and verification.
An authorized distributor is franchised by the manufacturer and buys electronic components directly from it, so traceability is complete. An independent distributor sources market stock outside the franchise chain. Independent distributors can find parts that are out of stock or discontinued at authorized distributors, but every lot needs component verification before use.
Component verification usually combines documentation and traceability review, external visual inspection, marking and date code review, X-ray inspection, decapsulation of a sample and electrical testing. Industry standards such as AS6081 and IDEA-STD-1010 describe these inspection steps.
Start with a last-time buy from the manufacturer or authorized distributor while stock remains. After that, obsolete parts are usually found through independent distributors and excess inventory worldwide, which is why verification matters for EOL components.
Send the full manufacturer part number, quantity, target price if you have one, required date and your quality requirement, such as factory sealed, authorized channel only or tested and verified stock.
They can be, when the supplier verifies each lot and provides traceability. Ask how parts are inspected and tested before they are quoted and shipped.
